Was surprised to see one has to 'login' to view the lounge.
Have been Maybe I missed the message, but when did that happen?

Yep - I "log" out...
I clear my browser history, caches, temporary internet files, cookies, saved passwords, etc. when I close my browser.
Everytime.
Up until the past weekend, a login was not required to view items in the lounge. Only to reply.

I have not had to log in for a while but there was a time, probably a year or so ago that I had to log in about every other time I tried to come here... It is the magic and mystery of the internet and computers... (which never make mistakes by the way.... remember that from the 70's?). As of yesterday I lost the ability to send or retrieve emails from two of my three email addresses.

What happens when one uses something like CCleaner, Disk Cleanup, or Clear Browsing Data? Cookies disappear. Have to sign in again? Or never use it and get lots of ads/pop-ups or virus'?

Several of the sites I go to will log one out every once in a while. One does it about once a week and sometimes it's a battle royal just to get logged back in.

I totally hate You Tube as they keep bouncing me out of their "restricted" videos. I don't even bother with them anymore. I miss some interesting stuff bur as far as I'm concerned, they no longer exist.

Purpose of clearing histories, etc.: Removes tracking cookies, frees up memory and just cleans up the machine. Too much 'stuff' will slow down your machine and could open a path for malware and other not so nice things into your system.
It's just a habit I got into back when security software, (Norton's, McAfee's etc.) were not all that great in detecting and removing suspect programs.

YMMV
