How about Cane-Fu
I am a trained stick fighter ( not a twirler). Doesn't matter what kind. Bo, Jo, Hanbo, Kali sticks, whatever, However, I think that Korean cane fighting - a part of Hapkido is probably most useful. The canes used are hooked, and that adds a whole lot to the syllabus. Snake's canes are impressive as hell, and the handle would serve the same function as a hook. I also have and carry a wooden cane with a heavy brass ball as a handle. Not as many ways to use it as the hook, but it sure has stopping power.

You all act like you live on the Gaza strip. If one needs a weapon they probably will loose the fight. A weapon should be an extension of one's mind, body and soul. In most cases people who don't understand this get said weapon taken from them and .....well....you know.

What makes you thing "they would probably loose the fight"? There are a number of vets, current and former LEO's and folks who just have skills you apparently don't comprehend.

Myself, at my age, I will most likely loose a fight with a younger, faster, stronger antagonist "IF" unarmed. Give me a 18" to 24" hunk of pine dowel or better yet two and the story changes. It isn't weight, it's momentum and application of said force that determines the effectiveness.

I, for one, have broken my left knee twice (second time took most of a year to learn to walk again!) along with arthritis in both ankle (plus prior breaks in both) and arthritis in the left hip. I still need assistance! I also usually (legally) have a Glock 27 (converted to 357 Sig) on my strongside. As Jeff Cooper, advised my (cane and my) pistol is only to protect me until can get to my rifle! I avoid fights and if attacked it is maximal!!

A stick is not used against only people. Twice I have had to fend off aggressive dogs while out walking. (My doctor says exercise, lose weight and eat better. I hate her ;) )
Once against two little snarling yip dogs. Quick poke changed their mind. Second scary one against two large German Shephard mix. Me yelling and striking the lead one had them run off. But my heart must be ok. It has never beat that hard before.
The news talks about animal attacks on the rise Coyote, wild dogs cougars etc. I never leave home without a stick.

Here's one I made 15 yrs ago. It's a Sweet Gum sapling that had a wild grape
vine around it giving it the look. Peeled the vine and the bark off. Hung it up
with a weight on the bottom to cure and stay straight then varnished. Light
for the size, 58 inches. Put a rubber cane tip on it. I use a cane when walking
and sometimes take this in the woods when I hike.

I'm sure I am not the only one here that will beg to defer. In every city and in most towns there's at least one martial arts studio that teaches some form of stick work. Within 30 minutes of me there's hopkido, shidokan, fencing (easy to substitute a stick for a saber or epee'), and three Filipino Martial Arts gyms. There's also a single stick club.

My choice is the FMA and after 40 years of training and having actually had to have used it in combat (collapsible baton), I assure you that you are incorrect.

If you all are looking for some classy self-defense sticks look here.
I have a few Blackthorns and a couple sticks made of Osage Orange. Nothing (yet) from this gentleman.

I just took a look ... these sticks are for very wealthy individuals! OMG! "Ya don't have to sell many $20 shoe shines to call it a day"

A friend of mine lives in a senior housing development with patio homes and 2 large ponds connected by a stream. There are geese nesting in the area and they are quite aggressive. One of the ganders flapped and pecked my friend and knocked him down. He was bruised and scraped up pretty good. I gave him a sjambok and showed him how to use it. That gander decided to try to intimidate my friend and Burt thumped it 3 or 4 good welts with the sjambok. Now when he walks a couple of geese sound the alarm and they all move out of his way.

That's a beauty! Here's a pic of a long shillelagh I made many years ago when I discovered the vine wrapped sapling and saw the possibilities. A neighbor woman of 90 years old saw me making it on the front porch and told me they were called "Serpent Sticks" in the old days. The Blackthorn stick was my Grandfather's. He spent much time in Ireland and that's likely where he made it. I had a hip replaced recently and used them both for the 1st time - the Blackthorn has particularly comfortable grip and would be a good defensive implement - it is unbelievably tough. Not likely to break.

My Cold Steel Shillelagh. Not "an extension of my mind, body and soul", though.

Probably the same type Watertender has.

OK, now you have me doing it. The bo and jo don't really qualify as canes, but.... I got the the little black swagger stick / sword many decades ago at a flea market when I was a kid. About 150 years old. My favorite carry is the first one after the wooden sticks. Nice hook.

I had some folks in the area that let dogs run free. I put my 4 year old in a stoller and wheel her to kindergarden and pick her up. When the dogs got a bit squirrely I started carrying an aluminum baseball bat. Just laid it crossways across the handle of the stroller. Basically solved my problems because when I picked it up, the dogs decided they needed to be somewhere else. For self defense, I think a wack on an elbow or outside of the knee would stop aggression. A head or body shot might be lethal, so stay away from those.

There are certain points that when struck disable parts of the body.

On an arm, point of shoulder, elbow or wrist will disable an arm. Hip, knee or ankle disable a leg.

In either case, if done correctly two strikes can take a person out of a fight.

I've watched a Kali expert hit the point of both shoulders so fast the stick was just a blur. Had his opponent not had protective pads he'd would have been on the ground (actually he was down) without the use of either arm.

Heck, even if not put down, the best the opponent could have done was run awkwardly away.

A third strike would have disabled a leg and the crawling away was all that was left.

And that's just destroying three joints. Applied to large muscles groups the same outcome would have resulted but with less "permanent" disability.

Now imagine what a trained person could do if you replaced the stick with an appropriate edged weapon.

The United States Army found out.
