BP loads

Does anyone load a black powder to copy the type of ammo that they used back to 1870 - 80s
Just thinking I'd like to try something like that without going the Old Army route. I've never dabble in the realm of black powder cartridge loading.

Makes a total mess of your revolver. Be sure your load fills the case plus a bit of compression. To each, his own. Good luck.

It was just a thought. When out target shooting at the range. I might like to try a couple of black powder loads to compare powder loads. Was wondering about a particular recipe

With black powder, it is safe to fill the case/cylinder anywhere from 1/2 to all the way full. It ain't gonna blow up.

Accuracy - that is different altogether.

I load 35 grains of Goex FFG under a 200 grain cast in starline cases with a standard pistol primer for my 44-40's. It chronos at an average of 830 fps from my 4 Vaqueros in 44-40. A pair of 4 5/8 and a pair of 5 1/2 inch Bisley vaqueros. It chronos 1080 fps from my Uberti 1866 yellowboy. This is as close as I can get to the original loading. I shoot these in "Pale Rider" class in cowboy action shooting.

What about after shooting cleanup. Is there any special solvent or other materials needed to thoroughly clean a standard cartridge revolver when using black powder?

I use some windex with ammonia and very hot water to clean the black powder residue, then a cleaning with Ballistol and hot water, then patches to dry and finally a patch of CLP and an exterior wipedown.
