Does anyone make a one piece base for the Older Ruger 44 carbine? This is the tube model.
Well,,,,,, kinda yes and kinda no. The .44 Carbine and 10-22 receiver radius is the same. And the spacing of the mounting screws on the .44 receiver is the same as the front set of the 10-22. So if you have access to an older version of a Weaver TO-9(the current version has a different number of screw holes) it can be easily modified to work. At least I thought it was easy. This is predicated that your rifle is not a newer one that has blind front receiver screws. The rifle also needs to be disassembled.
If you swap the base front to back, two of the holes line up.
Then if you remove the rear screw of the front pair(which is a size 6-40, the same as Ruger ring screws or Weaver ring cap/strap screws) and install the base with the rear screws, you can flip the rifle upside down and use the now empty screw hole as a guide to center punch the location for a new hole in the base. Be careful not to booger the threads with the punch.
Remove the base, drill the hole, flip the base over and countersink for the new screw head. Don't forget to get a correct size screw. The one you took out will not be long enough.
Voila! A one piece base installed.
As an added bonus, the older TO-9 base is not as tall as the new ones so the factory sights can still be used if so desired. Just in case your batteries die.
