Two days ago I found out a cousin's husband was stationed at an Air Force detachment on Mindanao. He didn't say much about what they did there. Wonder if it's the same place.
Very likely. To my knowledge the US military did not have any other presence on Mindanao - at least during the 1968 - 1975 time frame.

Now, CIA agents operated on Mindanao while I was there - they were helping the Marcos regime fight against "Filipino communists" (in fact many of these were actually Muslim separatists - precursors to the Al Queda strain that populates many places in SEA). Occasionally a CIA agent would use our detachment's encrypted communications system to message their stateside handlers.

Find out more about your cousin's Mindanao activity - where and when. Might be interesting. Tell him I was in the 1035th Tech Ops Squadron (aka 1035th Field Activity Group), Detachment 423, in Bukidnon Province - about 100k northeast of Cagayan de Oro. [Not too far from a Del Monte pineapple plantation.] I was there during 1970-71. Fuss at him if he won't talk...our mission (which was classified top secret at the time) has for the last 20+ years been declassified.

The last two MARS flying boats that have had a long fire fighting career are headed to a museum. Good to see these rare birds are being preserved.
Several years ago I saw one at the Oshkosh airshow. It is a size large airplane for sure.
It demonstrated a water dump on the runway. They are not only size large they can carry a bunch of water.

It's last flight

Motors are finicky things. One site i was posted at, i would hear (even from inside the gatehouse) one of the local-based dc3 casually come in from the north, as usual, . One night he came in rather hot, ahead of a storm. I heard they lost a motor on the next flight, and now, 30 years on, cannot recall observing the old bird again.
