Just looking at your gun, I'd say they shortened an existing 5.5 inch barrel and re-marked it. That is the only way I can reconcile the front sight issue.
Extremely odd to have a barrel separation this late in the game. I hope they found the cause.
Original cause was dealt with in the 80s...
I think that may be one of the problems. Where your gun has the "Southport" rollmark is where the serial # would have been on a Blackhawk. I don't see how that could be original.
I would be very curious to see the article, but have had no luck finding it either. Unless someone has digitized...
Be careful with those "reloads". He might want to break them down and re-use some of the components...

Have to agree with you on the carbines. A lever action will let you "top up" your mag without having to pull it from the gun. You can also shoot specials and lighter loaded mags. Not to mention the plethora of cast bullets that the "levers" can handle that a gas-gun would eventually choke on...
