There are so many facets to this discussion. In defense of the schools, in todays world anytime a school official tries to discipline a student there is a good chance that a parent is gonna be down at the school raising wholly heck. They want to virtually run the school to their liking. I am going on 79 years old and when I was a kid if I got in trouble at school it was automatically assumed by my parents that I had screwed up and I was punished by them accordingly. It honestly amazes me that anyone wants to become a teacher anymore. And yet fortunately there are still some really good ones, my grandkids have had some of them.

My kids had access to the HD collection by 10 or 12. Old enough to be home alone old enough to protect themselves. My biggest fear was someone catching my oldest daughter alone at home. She would probably kneecap them for general principles.

This one made me chuckle. I remember some of my friends in school who had older sisters that could whip about any boy close to her age!

The parents were negligent in buying him the gun when they knew he was unstable. When the gun was purchased it should have been secured in a safe place that the kid did not have access to.
Everyone dropped the ball in this case from the parents to the school.
I wonder if there are other children in the family? The mother having an affair doesn't sound like a good home environment and the father not making sure that the gun was out of the kid's hands is also negligent.
Everyone loses in this situation, especially the 4 kids who were killed.

The parents WERE called to the school. They were shown the disturbing pictures their son drew, depicting a handgun and a bloody victim. The parents KNEW HE HAD ACCESS to a gun. They didn't confront their son, tell the school about his new gun, and they refused to take him home. The parents should have asked him where the gun was.

Guess all our parents got lucky, as it was not uncommon to see guns in gun racks at the high school, and coaches going dove hunting with us minors after football practice. Sorry that too many have missed out on these types of experiences. It has to do with upbringing. Three of us growing up were told that every gun in the house was loaded (whether or not it was) and all of us knew not to touch anything...and so did our friends.

my parents would have beat the cr-p out of me if i touched ANYTHING they said not to.
times have changed.
if i killed someone? dad would have asked to throw the switch to put me out of my misery as a defective unit.

And, happily, you weren't mentally ill.
If you had been, your parents would hopefully have intervened in any irrational acts.

There is a reason this waß a legal first though. Parents are sued but not criminally liable. That's still a stretch. Opens pandoras box. Now that gun you bought your nephew for hunting? Your protection gun you thought you hid where your bullied son couldn't find it? You're going to jail! Ever sold a gun with no paperwork? God knows who owns it now but they'll connect it to you. See how precedents change the playing field?

Way too many "yeah, but..." excuses to exonerate the parents for what happened. Bad parents produce bad kids. The grandparents apparently didn't teach their own kids properly. Not illegal, of course, but a sign of the times.

Bob Wright stated the correct conceptual answer. However, it would take two generations before the implementation of his fix would show up in our society.

So what do we do for the ensuing 40+ years? I think the jury got it right. Bad behavior must have consequences.

Let's see if this new trend is equally applied across all socioeconomic levels of society. I'll be willing to bet it won't be.
We all know you are correct. In some "socioeconomic" neighborHOODS, parents can't even be identified, are already being held accountable for their own illegal actions, or just won't be charged for political reasons.

Next children will go to jail for actions of their parents. You didn't red flag dad who was becoming senile? Off to jail you go. You didn't take away his drivers license, off to jail you go.
I bought my first firearm with cash at age 12, no parent involved, no background check, and that was in New York City.

I disagree. im not responsible for other peoples actions, not yours, not my wife's, not my the guy next store! we are country of individualism. and should be held accountable for your actions, and yours alone. where will it stop? the guy the robbed the bank and uses a get away car, so the guy that sold him the cars also responsible? I think not.

And if the parents had physically restricted the boy from free movement they would be charged with child abuse.
Having raising a boy that was uncontrollable I feel sorry for the parents.
The parents were over charged.

Darned if you do, darned if you don't.

hind sight is always 20/20, but the parents could have done more when they got called to the school..at the very least that is a sick call to work and take your kid home, check for the weapon, act on what you don't find at home where it should be.....does that warrant a manslaughter conviction...that is the tough call.
