First off Cary,, I'm glad you found your new Harbor Freight.

The issue of "chinese junk" and such is a more complex issue than just what is perceived.

Let's go back to post WWII, when "Made in Japan" was considered cheap. Many Vets & their families refused to buy stuff so marked. Principals. But as time passed,, we have discovered that despite the horrors of WWII & the Japanese we fought & defeated, we have overcome (mostly) the attitude of "cheap junk" from them. Nowadays,, lots of good quality products do come from Japan.
Yet,, there still an underlying feeling of how they lost face in defeat,, and as such, they have worked hard at trying to beat America economically.
The same thing in general is happening with us & China. While we never really fought on Chinese lands,, they were a big part of the Korean War. They too have an underlying attitude of losing face & wanting to beat us economically.
Winchester rifles are now made in Japan and are excellent.

If every business that sells Chinesium junk closed, most areas would be in serious trouble. The businesses are not really at fault. Their business is built around buyers' preferences. Some of us operate on budgets that don't allow $400 wrench sets or $2000 air compressors.
American work ethic is another reason that industry moved out.
Oh boy , well here I go ..one of the main reasons is bad trade deals, and inflation forcing in house companies to raise prices to pay increased worker salaries thus passing it on to fellow Americans. There are lots of reasons why but,it won't help us at all for all them to disappear if the prices that are being charged for homemade goods are higher.
Let's look at winches .. only 1or 2 brands is mostly made in America : Ramsey and maybe one Warn. Beyond that some are American owned but still source parts and have assembly done in China. There are literally 20 different brands of winches all of which are made in just a couple different factories in China. Unless all manufactured parts are no longer made over there and are made here then how would anyone afford one. The price is literally 3 times as much for the American made ones.

I would like to know where to get everyday use items that are NOT from China. If we're just talking tools, a greater percentage of even USA name brands have parts (or whole) made in China. Look at the label on the next overpriced Snap-On tool you buy. Likely came from China. I have about $35K invested in tools and more than a little of it was NOT cheap but made in China. I just bought a secondary cart (to prevent having to upgrade my $5K tool chest) and I got it a HF. Price was $260 out the door. Blue Point (Snap-On's budget brand) has one similar for $1400. They're both made in China.
If you look you can find American Made or non-Chinese made tools. Stay away from the box stores!

Well, I don't have any on welfare 2 retired and 2 working and 1 a small business owner. And myself working.
I have long said welfare has been a strain and drain on the average American. All I know is taxes eats me up. I had to pay out over 1500.00 this past year to the feds. That's after they raped me all year long. Many on such programs who don't belong on them.

There is NO WAY Do It Best is as big as The Home Depot and Lowes Home Improvement.

Local. See? I have Walmart, The Home Depot, Atwoods, and the highest priced store for general items there is ... Tractor Supply.

Ya'll please need to remember there is no Ace or Menards everywhere. But there is a The Home Depot or Lowes somewhere close-ish to most.
Can't say today. I have been out of that business 25 years and many things have changed. Duckback is owned by Sherwin Williams today. But in the 80's and 90's they were big and Lowe's and Home Depot had not started flooding the market yet.

The Chinese people and their products are here in a big way. AND, they are not here on vacation.....they're on a mission! I buy very little at HF! Very little! Our politicians facilitated industry leaving America or shutting down. The have and are allowing this to happen!
Trump cut corporate tax for businesses to be inline with other countries and they were moving back, expanding and hiring here. JB is talking raising them. If he is elected in 2034 more will be moving out again

They moved out because the politicians you elected stole money from the American business and gave it to the Chinese, Japanese, Mexican.....

I try to avoid HF for the Chinese issue but then I go to another store and there stuff is made in China too. My plan is to buy more and more at HF and save the receipts then when all the Commie soldiers who snuck over the border cut loose, I'll show them the Harbor Freight receipts. What I find interesting is that a lot of HF tools are sold under the name Pittsburg.
You can not get away from Chinese made stuff right now. I remember when Walmart was only USA made stuff but the could keep prices down.
The only consolation is that our purchasing power, though dwindling, keeps their economy going. Lots of leverage if you know how to use it. I don't think nMr. Xi wants 1,000,000,000 hungry people running around.

Veterans 🇺🇸
Lowe's- 10% Vet discount unlimited amount annually
Home Depot- 10% Vet discount up to $400 annually
Harbor Freight- Vet discount 0%
Fooking Chinese don't give a crap we served, we're their enemy
You may or may not know that Lowes & Home Depot no longer give the discount on appliances., like microwaves, etc.

They just opened a new one in my area. It's been mobbed with shoppers. I can't remember the last time I was in a store and got so many offers of assistance. Very upbeat atmosphere. That being said, our local HD also has people patrolling the aisles so it's not that hard to get some assistance there, either, but the clerks aren't out searching for customers to help, for the most part.

HF has put a lot of effort into making some quality items lately. The Hercules and Icon lines, especially.

I've been to the local Harbor Freight a time or two. Usually when I need a tool I'll only use once or twice or a tool I figure I might break anyway.

HF opened in South Burlington a few years ago and it is over a half hour away. I usually get what I need at local hardware stores. Used to get a 10% discount from my job at a local one called Aubuchon's and I continued to use it after I retired, but about a year ago they killed it for retirees. Without the discount, it no longer beats Home Depot, so if I need anything pricey, I will try to wait until I'm up near HD an hour away. Only thing I ever bought at Harbor Freight was a couple of tarps and some huge screw hooks for hanging bicycles in the garage. Their heavy-duty tarps seem to be reasonable quality for half the price.

Having made my living as a mechanic I am a Snap On guy. I have broken many other brands, and yes, they may have had a lifetime warranty, but I had to go to them. Snap On came to me.

That said, HF has its place even in professional toolboxes. Some specialty tools are hundreds of dollars. HF has them far cheaper. If it is not one you are going to use a lot it is cost effective to buy one, two, even three of the HF version. Some of their tools, even if you use them a lot, are still cost effective because the life span isn't a lot different, but the price is (air tools, floor jacks are examples)

Besides that wonderful smell of Chinese oil (huge sarcasm on this point)

You completely missed the point. Sending good jobs overseas means your neighbors may become a drain on the system causing taxes to go up. In the long run you dont save money buying cheap tools. YMMV
