this is the newer variation of the Vaquero in 45 Colt (because there are no old model Vaquero,s) short barrel, birds head grip, bluing is great, small, and I do mean minor blemish on the barrel. grips are an awsome green laminate. I've never seen them before. distributors exclusive? I'm not up on these. $750 shipped. Mr. DS...

Hi. Dumb question, I was led to believe that there was a change in the vaquero line some point in the 20teens that made the frame "smaller" less material. Is that not true? Sorry if I'm supposed to post this question somewhere else. But I saw the title and figured it was at me anyways. Thanks for any feed back man.

the are early made vaqueros, there large framed, 2 digit prefixed guns, and the newer produced vaqueros, med framed guns, 3 digit prefixed guns. both are great guns, but always remember....all old model guns ended in 1973. them are called three screws. there are no such thing as a old model vaquero. just large and small framed ones. pretty simple. really, and its always a great question. so not to worrie on asking. The New Vaquero was introduced in 2005 and made on the old model .357 mid-size frame. The exception is the New Vaquero .44 mag which is made on the original Vaquero size large frame.

What makes the 2005 model the "New Vaquero" is:

the Ruger Indexing Pawl System (RIPS) for easier loading/unloading with the new model transfer bar action,

the old model XR3 size but narrower 7/16" width grip frame,

and the longer hammer spur.

I have a LOT of .45ACP ammunition, and already have the polished stainless birdshead in .45C …
I found myself in the same situation with my Vaquero Montado which is 45 Colt.

So I slimmed down a bunch of my full moon acp clips to .020" thickness, fill them with 45 acp and pop out my 45 Colt cylinder to load and unload.

It's actually much faster than loading and unloading individual rounds. And much cheaper than getting a 45 acp cylinder for my gun!

Very cool and handy size. I have a similar distributor exclusive New Vaquero variation in 44 Spl with the 3 3/4" barrel, but with the standard grip frame.

I hear ya. Been faced with that problem. There's two choices: wait for Ruger to make it, or turn the closest thing to it that Ruger does make into what you want.

Life has always been too short for me to wait for the first choice….

Do a search on Gunbroker for a New Vaquero .45 ACP cylinder. Eventually you'll find one. There's always cylinders that gets separated from the gun. Or call Ruger and see if they'll fit one to your gun.
