I was literally about to complete my last pass at the gun show this morning when I noticed the guy standing next to me had a pistol pouch. After the table owner turned it down, I asked to see his 2.5" blued Speed Six. In good shape, it had a stiff DA pull, but he accepted my offer of $500 so now I have a revolver I don't even know if I like! (Sometimes you just gotta take a chance.) The DA pull smoothed up a little bit after I blew the dust out of the revolver with some oil, but is still stiff. Taking the grips off I noticed what seems an odd spring setup. There are TWO hammer springs: One primary and one tiny little spring at the top of the heavier one, maybe 1/8" long and much thinner. The owner says the revolver has had a trigger job. Can't tell by me, but maybe there is some guy out there doing bizarre trigger jobs involving the addition of extra springs??!!!
Anyway, I took the chance because I remember seeing people sing the praises of this revolver (probably on this forum) and concluded that I couldn't be risking much. And, what is the difference between this and its sister revolvers?

Now attached to original post. See small spring on top of big spring. All I can think of is a Bubba trigger job. My apologies to Bubba if I am wrong!

Looks like some chowderhead cut too much off the original mainspring, and tried to correct his booboo by adding the little spring. I'd throw both in the trash and replace with an original spring. Probably a WTB post in the classified section will result in finding the replacement spring you need.

Hopefully chowderhead limited his gunsmithing to cutting the spring.

Thanks, armfel. That was my suspicion but I am used to playing with the guts of S&Ws, not Rugers, so thought some secret sauce might have been thrown in here that I had no awareness of. I have a spare spring set for a GP100 on hand. Is that the same set?

I did some searching and apparently they all take the same spring sets. If you're curious, there are some videos on youtube on changing out springs and such in Rugers. They looked good to me, but again, I know S&Ws, not Rugers. Thanks again for your answers that arrived almost before I finished typing the questions!! ;-)

Once you get the right spring setup in that Speed Six I'm betting you're going to like it. I have my stainless one since new in '83. Carried and shot it a bunch and it's smooth as butter. Enjoy!

You can ask Ruger for a new mainspring (they may not have it as it is an old design) or order a Wolff spring kit from Midway. Luckily they are easy to replace unlike a Smith or a Colt. Another reason why many of us like the Ruger design!
