I use them to push patches through the bores, but what are they really for?

That's not how they're designed, but if it works for you, that's great.

Ideally, they are a tight fit in the bore, so you have thousands, if not millions of microscopic fibers scrubbing the bore. They get dirty, and useless, fast, so I prefer to use patches alone, either in a slotted tip or with a jag tip. Then I can discard the dirty patch, and grab another clean one. And all this, back and forth switching between a bore brush and patches.

I suspect many of us have a whole bunch of these swab tips, unused, in our cleaning supplies.

Yeah they work great but get dirty pretty darn quick after a pass or two. I use them like crazy for my rimfire rifle as the bore cleans quickly without using patches. A shot of bore cleaner is about it.
