Using the hand brake at a stop on a hill is a trick I learned driving a manual transmission vehicle in San Francisco - at an uphill traffic signal, set the hand brake while waiting for the light to change; to get moving when the light turns green, release the hand brake and let out the clutch simultaneously (while giving it gas).
Cosby had a bit about volkswagens, manual transmissions, sanfrancisco hills...

Lombard st. - I have it on 8-track, remember it well along with several other funny skits on that tape

I learned how to drive in dad's '65 C20 4 speed 40ish years ago, still have the truck

first truck I bought was a '68 C2500 3 OTT, regrettably sold it to a shipmate years ago.. did drive it down Lombard St. in '92, we were crossing golden gate heading back into town and approaching turn lanes onto van ness where 101 continues.. dared to go straight, I proceeded up and over Lombard and down the crooked side.. no biggie but parking in SF was a chore sometimes

parked in front of barracks on treasure island

next truck I bought was a '74 C20 4 speed

tough describing how to drive a standard trans, so many variables especially between a v8 low geared truck and a 4cyl econo box

good luck!

First, I learned how to drive a manual car.

I'm wondering if when you are at a red light, should you put the car in neutral and only have your right foot on the brake? Or have the clutch pedal depressed and have it in first gear?

Also, I was just looking at a Bring A Trailer auction and in the comments they talked about the idea that a person should NOT drive with your hand resting on the gear shift. Some people said pre-mature wear, and others said it's a myth.

What do you think?

We were wanting a golf cart for down here at the beach but ended up buying a jeep instead. It's a two door manual. Much more fun than a golf cart.

I was driving it today and wondered about these questions.

The Jeep has auto stop/start, but it's only activated if the car is in neutral and you aren't touching the clutch pedal. I thought that was interesting.

Also when parked, do you leave the car in gear -OR- leave it in neutral and use the emergency brake? (That is what I do.)
Kevin, have you been driving the Jeep? How's it going?

Oh yes! It's so fun. It's a soft top, so on nice days you can fold back the top easy peasy.

On newer manual cars they have hill start assist. My 2013 VW Golf had it.

If you are on an incline and stopped, when you take your foot off the clutch, it will automatically hold for about 2 seconds. Perhaps 3 seconds, without rolling backwards into the car behind you. If there is one of course.

This thread got pretty long. I'll start a different threat with some pictures of the Jeep. It's pretty nice. 😊

Manual transmission and a three on the tree...it's what I learned to pilot on...That's was when they had drive ins with car hops. Does that expose my age group?

That was what we referred to as a "standard transmission" because that was what you got if you didn't order a special automobile with one of them automatic options.

Yes, same as mine.

My best friend in HS had a 58 Chevy with 3 on the tree. The linkage was worn and when you went to shift from 1st to 2nd if you didn't hold the lever towards you until you got to the center and then forward to go up to 2nd it would stay in 1st and also go into 2nd. When you let the clutch out it would stall. Then you had to pop the hood and play with the linkage to get it back to neutral so you could then start over. A real pain it the ass, it always seemed to happen when you were trying to get somewhere fast.

I have a BMW 330i 6 speed manual. At a red light sometimes I do both, in neutral no clutch or clutch in and in gear, depending on how long the light is. Always park with gear in reverse (lowest gear) but really just a habit. It will be 20 years old this December, never had a clutch or transmission problem.

Had a friend leave a car with me back in the late 1960's when he got drafted. It was a 1959 Goliath that was made in Germany. It had a boxer 4 cylinder engine like a VW bug, but it was front wheel drive and water cooled. It had a 4 speed on the column. When he first got it the clutch disc was worn out. I went down to the local VW dealership and found a useable clutch disc in their dumpster and it fit in the Goliath perfectly.

My (grandfathers) 56 Ford F100 had a greaseable throw-out bearing. Somewhere during a rebuild it was replaced with one that didn't have the zerk. 274K milers on original trans and rear-end. I always put my cars in neutral when at a light, my 85 Ram 4X4 (214K) and 2013 Ford Focus (105K). Your car your choice.

And a follow up question. Do you use the brakes to slow down or say go from 5th to 4th to 3rd etc to get the car to slow down?

or just brakes only?

I've always heard just use the brakes because they are cheaper than a new transmission and you don't want to put the extra wear on the transmission.

Is that correct?
If downshifting and clutching correctly, it's no big deal,
It's also fun...

If you are down shifting and matching rpm's, so that there is a close matchup in the rpm's of the engine and tranny, there is little or no wear,
And it's a useful skill you should have, you will enjoy your manual more if you master matching rpm's.

Try it out...

Wish I could find a deal on a manual. I miss it and still think my kids should learn better than they have.
