If I find a dish in the frig and I am not positive what it is, then it goes right into the trash. Most of the time I mark things with what it is, and the date. Same for frozen items that are not in their original package. The other day I found a frozen burger that was in the back of the freezer with a date written on it showing that it was almost a year old. That went right into the trash. No need for me to take unnecessary chances with possibly spoiled food.

Take a covered dish out of the fridge, glance inside, and warm it up only to discover after it's warm and you've shoved a forkful into your mouth--THAT YOU'RE NOT SURE WHAT IT IS?
Not only that but you also can't remember seeing it on the table before it became 'leftovers'?
Just happened to me--been nice knowing you folks.
After some of the questionable things I ate in the Navy, leftovers don't bother me.

I've pulled things out of the freezer that wasn't marked and couldn't tell by looking if it was soup, stew or some other concoction. If it thaws out and isn't freezer burnt it has a chance if getting eaten if it still seems to be edible.

Mobuck, you might want to make an appointment with a neuropsychologist. It might be a sign of "age-related cognitive impairment." LOL

We date all leftovers and throw out anything OVER 7 days old.

You know it wasn't good when even the cats won't touch it. Sometimes the fridge looks like a penicillin lab with all the dishes growing something a slightly different shade of green/gray.
Sometimes on my rounds i have seen "caution; science experiment underway!" on the client refrigerators. One had a posted date of some 10 years previous...

One time my parents were at our house and my dad threw out my wife's sourdough starter. She still hasn't forgotten that.

But I've had food poisoning too many times. I don't eat any cooked food after day two and watch expiration dates very carefully.

My one weakness is gas station hotdogs. Man those are the best.
