I'm actually quite fond of when the cicadas hatch out and start doing their mating song. It reminds me of a nicer gentler time in my youth. We really haven't had a bad outbreak of them in a while so maybe this year will be the exception.
Living in the city I'm wondering if all of the mosquito spraying has affected them to some degree. I know it's just about wiped out the lightning bugs. They're still out in the country but nonexistent within the city limits.

Grew up in Rockland County New York in the early 60's. Not sure of exact year when cicadas hit. Looked up brood chart. (1962) Zillions of the boogers. People were raking up and burning piles of them along with tree leaves.
This was back in the day when you could burn leaves every year in the fall without government nazis fining you for not composting. I still miss that smell 😀

The worst I've experienced here in the Bluegrass in my time was 1974. Nothing since has come close. From what I read, this might be the year. But so far, nothing.
Same here. '74 was 24/7 loud buzzing (of course, we had no a/c so we had to keep our windows open.). Then 6-7 weeks later, after finally getting used to the sound, I woke one morning to a deafening SILENCE. They died overnight, except for a very few stragglers.
