It's The Commemorative Air Force (CAF), formerly known as the Confederate Air Force.
The name change was all about the money and support.

I worked on these T-34C from when they were new. Great plane and they took alot of abuse. Over the years some developed stress cracks on the carry through (the solid piece that the wings bolt to). It was monitored for any further expansion. Every 5 years the A/C was run thru an Aircraft Conditional Inspection (ACI). Here is the waste of money also.
The Navy started replacing the T-34 with the T-6 and the T-34's went thru their last ACI. We replaced all the cracked carry throughs and several corroded wing spars. ACI the plane gets paint strip, all flight controls removed along with the wings. Once done with Inspection, its put together, rigged, and painted. Ones that got the spars and carry throughs were as new as you could get. When we were done, the sent them to the boneyard.

Ohio! Way too freakin' close to the city!
When I was a kid I was in the Civil Air Patrol. I wrote a letter to the Base Public Information Officer and asked permission to go to the Boneyard. I received a letter back and it okayed it. Then I convinced my parents to drive me down there and we went to the gate and showed the guard the letter and he escorted us in wherever we wanted to go. At that time it was loaded with B-36's, and had a long row of fighters stacked on top of each other about 3 or 4 deep for scrapping. All jets F-80 to F-86 vintage. I was able to climb up into the Bock's Car, the B-29 that dropped the A-bomb on Nagasaki and a German JU-88. Arizona was a place that had many, many WW2 surplus planes at that time. Interesting times for sure, for a kid, anyway. That was about 1955.
And you can come to the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio and stand near the restored "Bock's Car"! Thank goodness a lot of history is preserved in this facility with free admission! The parking lot is always full when I drive by. My 12 year old granddaughter loves to go there and does so multiple times each year!

Wifie and I visited the Boneyard and Pima Air Museum in 2007.
What was sad for me was seeing the REMAINS of the XC-99 which is the cargo version of the B-36. I first saw the 99 at a distance in 1960 while at Lackland AFB during boot camp. Then in 1964 we took a tour of it during our first trip to San Antonio. My Dad was a crew member on B-36s after his return from B-29 deployment in Korea.
Son delivered some E-2s and C-2s to the boneyard.

Thanks for that. I was not aware of the XC-99.

Speaking of preserving history, it's too bad the USN hasn't kept the lead ship of each class, unless it's been sunk, in museums. Images having all those ships preserved for generations learn from.

We are lucky to have the USS Iowa, first of the last class of American battleships, here.

Obviously she was modified through her life. But lead ships as museums are rare among the rare ships that have been preserved.
