I recently became the owner of a Japanese Samurai Kabuto (Helmet).

Here is what I learned so far about the names of the parts and info on the symbols:

It is all genuine and original.
It is from the late 1700's to mid 1800's. (This was part of the Edo Period in Japanse history)

The liner is missing from inside.

The Hachi is 6 plates riveted together.

The symbol, or Mon, on the Fukigaeshi is one of 2 family names...either Hatakeyama or Kunishi.

The Shikoro is all there and in exceptional shape. But there is a chunk taken out of the back.

The artwork is very nice for being done by hand over 200 years ago.

Now I need to find anyone who knows more about this. Maybe track down an appraiser and find out value for insurance.

Anyone here on the board know anything about this stuff or can you refer a good appraisal company?

That would look great next to my two swords,,,,! (My dad brought a pair back from the South Pacific in WWII.) I wish I could help you with more info. Neat item! And, from what little I know,, they are not cheap items!

Yeah, it is pretty cool thanks.

My dad had it but I never heard where he got it from.

The little bit of research I have done shows that they can sell for decent money.
