I see a lot more panhandleders lately, sometimes with dogs or cats to tug at my heartstrings. A few weeks ago there was a guy at the Interstate on ramp with a horse. No kidding, nice looking horse saddled and bridled. If I say anything to them, I say that every store I have been in lately says they are hiring.

No one in my state needs to panhandle. There is a program for everyone. Likewise, many of the homeless have refused help. Heck, the mayor of LA is putting homeless in $600,000 apartments, so money must not be a problem. There is a "low income" subsidized housing area about ten miles away. People in that housing drive nicer cars than most of my neighbors. So obviously welfare pays pretty darned well.

Actually, vets are entitled to quite a few additional services over and above non vets. But many won't accept the help, and you can't force them inside. People may complain about California being a socialist state, and it is in many ways, but we do have considerable resources available.

Bought a few meals reluctant sbout giving the money. Our old church was close to the intersection of two major highways. A lot of times single guys would come by and tell pastor they were hungry. He asked them to take a large push broom and sweep the walk says of the church about a 10 minute job. He would the give them a token to take to the Morrison's Across the street and get what ever they wanted and the church would pay. In about five years maybe one taker.

Money is not the root of all evil. Greed is. Or as the Bible said "the love of money."
Some actually need help, others find panhandling is the easiest way for them not to have to work. The ones on the street corners in the middle of the 95+ heat or when it's cold and rainy outside are the ones that I will sometimes help. We see a lot of them with dogs and I think that is just another prop to boost your sympathy.

Greed, for lack of a better word, can be a good thing. Now, voraciously rapacious application of it, especially following the Rules Of Acquisition, is what one sells one's soul for. What you want to do with the wealth as, or after, you get it, is what makes you a philanthropist or a miserly dastard.
