Dave as of now just a shim spacer. Like a round faucet washer. Im thinking of leaving that section of the bracket long enough to drill and tap the dove tail blank
and crewing the front part of the rail to it.The way it is now is alotcsturdier than you would think.Actually i shortened the bracket and the entire rIl on to rests on the receiver and barrel. I will send you a good pic. When done

What's going to support the forward portion extending over the barrel?

What I would do is to drill and tap a hole through the forward part of the rail and the bracket, then put a machine screw with a rubber tipped end (or some silicon sealant) through it and tighten it against the barrel and Loc-Tite it when you are happy with it. That front screw could help you level the rail in relation to the receiver.

My suggestion exactly. I prefer a set screw with a nylon end- I get these on some AR15 receivers to tighten upper to lower play.

Warning- don't tighten this too much as it can induce a bow in the scope rail and potentially mess up your scope tube. You want just enough tension to stabilize the unsupported end of the rail and minimize harmonics.
