Calm before the storm here as of now. Should be any day now. Drive ya crazy but at least the big, ugly critters don't bite!
I remember the buzzy little suckers from back when I was a kid in Des Moines. My brother and I found the nymph shells and the red-eyed adults fascinating....
They drove our parents nuts.
Then suddenly they were gone.

have not heard a one here... but went 20 miles south to a friends place yesterday and they were LOUD!
That is national news, the combined hatch. I have experienced it in Missouri, but out West, folks could not imagine.

How loud is it? Well, I could probably step out on my porch and run some full auto and nobody would notice.
Actually, I am not offended with this sound. It is natural, very unique, and it's something to remember. It's a sound of summer.

Besides the usual high pitched noises, my tinnitus has sounded like loud flocks of birds and hordes of cicadas chirping & tweeting in my ears for decades.
It is so loud it is difficult for me to hear normal conversations.
24/7/365 for at least 25-30 years.
Just learned to ignore it.
So if those real critters hatch out and start their racket around here, it'll just be more background noise.

It's the sound of millions of bugs trying to get laid.
They don't bother me. I've been hearing 13 bajillion crickets chirping 24/7 for decades.
I have had a couple of people tell me that they are louder than usual this year but I haven't really heard it for myself. I do hear them in my yard but it seems they always come later here. I don't know why. Some years it is a dull roar & yes I am a tinnitus sufferer. My friend that lives an hour and a half Southwest of me told me it was so loud in his sister's neighborhood he thought there was some sort of alarm going off.
Oh, I can so relate. Hearing aids? I can't imagine the racket I'd hear that I've never heard before. I don't think I'd want to.
Hadn't thought about it but yes, cicadas sound VERY much like my tinnitus. Oddly, my hearing aids make no difference.

Into our second week in N. Ga.
A map of my area shows my home to be about dead center in the map. I am so looking forward to them. They really don't hurt anything, they are just noisy and a pest to swat away.
