We have been getting hooked lately on British detective shows. Some are good some not.
A little shocking to find out that the LEO's do not carry any firearms while hunting for killers.
Is that real?
I realize the UK has strict gun control but not even allowing cops to carry? Insanity.

What has been bothering me of late with these... my wife and I watch a lot of them, is the family always has to come to the morgue and identify the body. Even though they, the police, know exactly who the dead person is.

Also listen to the statement they give a person when arresting them.... it actually says if they don't tell them something and then try to use it in court it may be thrown out.... or something to that effect. Pretty much the opposite of a Maranda warning.

Over and over in these shows the detective goes alone to some abandoned warehouse or the like looking for the vicious killer. Often the detective is a woman. This all always rings as fantasy to me. I can't believe the female detectives in the UK are so dumb as to alone and unarmed after a dangerous male criminal.

If you ever watch one of the shows from New Zealand, they also go unarmed but they do carry pepper spray and a baton. But I need to use the closed captions to understand what they are saying in their strange version of English.

My and my wife's annoyance with those shows is that they usually always take place in a specific locale (like Midsummer, etc.) prompting us to often say that that village or whatever must be one of the most dangerous to visit, never mind live in. The writers lack imagination.

Nowhere near as dangerous as Cabot Cove. (Murder she wrote)

I really don't think Cabot Cover is even close to the number of murders that occur in MidSummer .... usually about half way through an episode is where I tell my wife somebody else is fixing to get killed. Great show... as of late we've been watching the original detective Barnaby's first TV show. Bergerac; it is what I would call a British 80's version of Magnum PI... with the lead guy a police detective on the Island of Jersey played by John Nettles. It ran for 10 seasons and the first couple Nettles was so young and thin it was hard to place him as Barnaby in the Mid Summer series.

A few years ago, I watched some British TV shows and the beginnings of other races/ethnic groups appearing as actors in the shows. Get used to it you racists. White people are NOT the majority of the people of the world. Hollywood is not the center of the world. I have watched Bollywood movies from India and found them quite entertaining. I have watched several times the best production of a show that was almost 60 episodes long by South Korea. The production values are even higher than anything I have ever seen come out of Hollywood. It was called Dae Jung Geum or Jewel in the Palace. When it was shown in several Asiatic countries, all work stopped because over 50% of the people of that country were watching it. Hollywood would love to see those kind of figures watch their entertainment productions. Granted, being as old as I am, it is difficult to watch different ethnicity, customs and people of different orientations act on the screens, but it is a fact of life. Do you really know what your neighbors have been up to? How many people have had to hide their social secrets? People who thought you know/knew? Not agreeing with a lot of the new wave, but then I do profess myself to be a hermit who shows tolerance and compassion.

I have no problem with minority actors playing roles where it is believable that the character might be a member of some ethnic or racial minority. But when a show is supposed to be taking place in the late 1800's for example, and a rich young woman is played by a Black actress, it is more than hard to find the show believable. All movies, TV, etc are make believe, but we allow ourselves to temporarily accept what we are seeing as real. Even science fiction movies, as long as they are internally consistent, can be enjoyed as being "believable". But if I am watching a show about a small village in the hinterlands of the U.K., and half the characters are Black or Indian, it takes it out of the believable zone for me. The same would be true if I were watching a Western today, and if it was obvious that the Native American characters were all White actors in make-up.

There were minorities from the New World (Americas) and the Far East since Columbus time when he took back slaves (to the Old World). After all he was a slave trader. So not too hard to believe that there were minorities in England during the 1700 and 1800's and in positions of various authority.

If you want wacko check out the Norwegian Police: They are issued a handgun which has to be kept in the truck of their vehicle in a lock box... but, wait it gets better; they have to call dispatch, describe their situation and maybe dispatch will give them the code of the day to unlock the box. I think Iceland might be the same.

That there were Blacks and Asians in England in the 18t century I have no doubt, but I do doubt that any were in positions of authority or wealth. In those days it was actually illegal for a person of the lower class to dress like a "gentleman", and if he did so, he could be arrested for "impersonating a gentleman". If that type of social rigidity existed for actual English citizens, I cannot imagine any circumstances in which an African Black person or Asian from China or elsewhere would be in any position other than possibly a servant.
