I was looking for a new Grill brush for my Weber grill his afternoon. Looked all over the outdoor dept. and I couldn't find them. Only the ones in the big sets. So I went up and asked the lady if she could tell me where the grill brushes were, and this is where she took me.

Funny.
Obviously she was clueless about cooking.

One thing I do on my grill,, is I got a flat, wooden paddle type (looks like a spatula) utensil. I use it as a scraper type of tool on my grill. Once you use it a bit,, it'll get grooves to match the grill metal,, and it's an easy way to clean the rods or runners. That way,, my stainless grill brush doesn't get worn out so easily or quickly.

I have a flat scraper that gets the top of the gates & on the other side it a a loose wrap coil that scrapes the sides of them. Not a nervous Nellie but watched the bristles of the wire brushes disappear for years, & wonder where they went.

Sems the number one increase in ER visits in the summer is brush bristles lodged in some ones throat, or worse. I concurred & quit using them.

My friend Brad ended up with a hole in his colon or lower intestine having swallowed one.
Got treated for "stomach flu" symptoms for many days.
Finally got sick enough to warrant a number of tests and hospitalization to find the problem; followed by surgery to remove the item.

Dang guys- something else to worry about. I've been using wire brushes for my whole life without an issue. Now I read this.

I do have a regimen that I follow that has worked so far- while the grill is still hot after cooking, it gets the wire brush. Then before the next usage, I use a composite type brush. Once it's fully heated, I wipe it with a wet rag.

But now you got me thinking…

Traeger makes a composite bristle / metal scraper grill brush that works well. I typically will finish cooking, clear the grill, and use the bristles of the Traeger brush to swipe a wet hand towel across the cooking grids / grill while its still hot. Keeps it very clean

That's what he composite one I was mentioning. It does work good- just don't use it in too hot of a grill. I ruined one that way…

The best and only way unless you want stainless in your throat

I started using BBQ grill mats several years ago. When you're done grilling just take them in the kitchen and clean them off and reuse them. You still get the cooking strips on your steaks and there is no sticking to the grates. Taste wise, there is no difference. What juices run off onto the grates you can scrape or brush off with whatever you like. It doesn't come in contact with your food.
