.45 Colt Heavy Ruger shooters........

Any of you with the beefy Rugers shoot Underwood Ammo's 250 gr. 45 Colt loads that are rated at 1450 FPS?
I have a box and have only fired several through a Rossi Mares Leg and they do kick that a bit,but how are they in a revolver as far as recoil?
Will give them a shot in my Alaskan...when it gets here.

Your Alaskan will handle them with ease.

I haven't seen any underwood in this part of the country. I like Buffalo Bore and will use HSM but I prefer a heavier bullet to a lighter faster one. JMHO, YMMV

I've pushed some 270gn bullets up to 1200 FPS or so in my Blackhawk, but that is really about as heavy as I want to go and still be able to
shoot more than a couple dozen in a day.

Jack, Underwood also produces a 325 grain .45 Colt +P load at an advertised 1,325 fps. I've shot some of these and they have proven accurate.

Haven't shot the specified ammo, but just as reference I shot a deer last year with a 250gr Keith bullet loaded to 1200fps from my SBH 44mag. Bullet entered the chest and exited the back leg. Lengthwise through the deer with a mild load! That 250 @1450 will work VERY well, and is probably plenty for elk

But personally, I would use a hardcast 300-340 gr if I was going elk hunting with it...

The 325 grain HC 1325 FPS is very shootable. Truth is the 45 Colt will handle most anything on this continent. There is something to be said for less recoil and getting back on target quicker. Should shoot well for you.

Do you get good ignition with 22.0grs of Win 296?

I use 22.5grs of H110 with a 250gr cast and the Hornady 250XTP.
Great accuracy. I don't have a chronograph either.

I'll echo the heavier hardcast bullets at lower than max velocities work really well on just about anything you'll find in the woods in the lower 48. Even though I have a converted Redhawk that shoots 454 quite nicely, I only go to the higher velocity stuff if I need it for extended range, and since I don't shoot handguns with optics there are few situations that merit me using full-blown 454 loads, or even the really heavy +P 45colt loads. I like to think of bullets in the 275-325 gr range at fairly mild velocity as 100 yard drill-press loads. Punch thru most critters sideways, lengthwise, or anywhichway you happen to hit them.

I use 22.5grs of H110 with a 250gr cast and the Hornady 250XTP.
Great accuracy. I don't have a chronograph either.

I use CCI #350 magnum large pistol in those, all indications are a complete burn.

For elk. Starting out at nearly a half-inch in diameter, expansion isn't needed on a large animal like elk, but you can sure use penetration. I personally would opt for a good hard cast bullet with a large me plat weighing something north of 300 grain.

Yep that Lee 300 gr bullet will do just fine over 23.5 gr H110/W296 . If you want a lighter faster round load the 240 gr XTP Mag bullets running at 1400-1500 Fps. Tough enough for elk. :lol:

I have a couple of boxes of Garrett Hammerheads. Just bought em as a test to see what they will do. One is his 365gr +P LFR super hard cast advertising 1250fps from a 7.5" bbl. The second is his 405gr +P RHO super hard cast also doing 1250fps. I have not found the time to shoot either of them yet.... but I am looking forward to seeing how they perform in both the RH 45/45 and my new Rossi M92 (but, now that I think about it, I'm gonna buy me some dedicated shooting gloves before a light one off in the handgun ....... :wink: ).

I have fired many of the Corbon 325 grainers, at a printed on the box 1300 plus fps, in my Bisley 45's with accuracy and without painful felt recoil. I know the post is for handguns but I had a complete side to side pass through on a black bear with the same load.
