I recall someone telling us recently that we would need nuclear weapons and f-16s.

The AIR-2A (Genie) was an unguided rocket with a nuclear warhead carried on F106s and F101s in the 70s. It was point and shoot with an internal timer that exploded after a fixed delay that was determined by the launch aircraft's avionics. The presumption was that the Russians would be flying in big formations (think WWII) so one AIR-2A would take down dozens of incoming bombers. The ground launched BOMARC missile with about 400 mile range and 10kt warhead operated on the same principal.

We saw that one. On the Blue Forum my husband's comment was to take it on Pawn Stars so Rick could say he would call in the expert but unless it could be detonated it wasn't worth much. That or turn it into a statue with an image of Slim Pickens from Dr Stranglelove riding it!
