Is there a serial number list for the SBH long frames anywhere? I was wondering how many the 300 might have survived. Also if the story is true the Elmer thought the frame was to long and Bill Ruger had it shortened on his recommendation. Thanks for any input or information.

Yeah...I can agree that Elmer thought the grip was slightly too long. I believe that is wrote up in one of the old gun mags from the era.
The two prototypes that I know of...15527 and 15528 probably both have short grip frames. I know 15528 does since we used to own it.
In case you are wondering why two guns with such high serial numbers would be prototypes, both of those guns came off the line as ".44 Blackhawk - Super Blackhawk configuration", and were numbered right along with the .44 Blackhawk "flattop" series, so both are actually earlier than serial number 1 Super Blackhawk. I believe Elmer Keith had 15527 and I really think it is the gun pictured in Ruger's early Super Blackhawk advertising with the crazy zebra type grain in the grip panel.
This all means that an even earlier predecessor to those two guns must exist, which had a "long" Super Blackhawk grip frame on it.

:D I know where about 50 Long frames live in Utah. The prototype 15528 is the one pictured in the instruction manual and parts list.

Thanks Chet and John, good info. From what few I have seen, the serial numbers were like, XX, XXX and four digit. What is the lowest number you have heard of? So Utah accounts for 1/6 of the 300 or so out there?

Thanks again Ron

:? 9 is the lowest that I know of. Have to check my number but the highest is around the 3000 range. 61 is a long frame and 62 standard. 138 standard and 139 long frame. So there was no ryme or reason to what was or wasn't a long frame. Also 70 is a long frame and 72 standard. Will post my list tomorrow.

Would anybody be able to post a pic of that here? Curious to see that one.
